Dean Englefield joined Ramsay in 2011 as the Physiotherapy Manager at Southern Highlands Private Hospital and is now the CEO, leading the way for Ramsay in employee engagement.

“It’s always been something I aspired to, to lead all the teams in a hospital and to broaden my skills enough to be able to do that well,” said Dean.

After five years as the Physiotherapy Manager, Dean became the Allied Health Manager for both Southern Highlands and Nowra Private Hospital, before securing the role of CEO of Southern Highlands in April 2022.

Dean credits his rise through the ranks to his participation in Ramsay’s leadership programs, having very good mentors and understanding and living the Ramsay Way.

“The Ramsay Way is a standard to uphold and it drives me every day. Paul Ramsay has sadly passed, but his memory lives on and I think it’s important to keep that legacy alive.”

Dean also acknowledged the many opportunities within Ramsay to upskill and network, including the Leadership Masterclass Series.

Dean’s efforts to focus on his people are paying off, with the recent Employee Engagement Pulse Survey showing the Southern Highlands Engagement score has increased 23% on the 2021 survey results and Enablement has increased by 10%.

When asked his secret, his answer was simple: “Just talk to your people. We spend time every day talking to our people and then we find ways to implement what they’re saying they need.”

“You can’t keep everyone happy but if they feel like they’ve been heard, it goes a really long way.”

Dean’s vision for the foreseeable future is to continue to honour his people and community.

“I love being able to provide value to the community, so working in a community hospital, a big part of my focus is on providing the highest quality of services and always expanding our service offering.”

“I plan to continue to grow and develop the people here at Southern Highlands and ensure that we all exemplify the Ramsay Way, long into the future.”
